With the COVID-19 pandemic expected to be a part of all of our lives for the foreseeable future, those who are health-conscious are doing everything they can to give their immune systems an extra boost. This way, if a person does get infected, their body has a better chance of fighting it off or only having mild symptoms.

One of those supplements that will offer additional protection is vitamin D. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, stated earlier this year, “There is good evidence that if you have a low vitamin D level, you have more of a propensity to get infected when there are infections around.”

With that in mind, Holliswood Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at four ways vitamin D can benefit your overall health.

  1. Seasonal Benefits

Vitamin D is absorbed through sunshine, so it goes without saying that plenty of people are deficient during the cold, gloomy winter months. Before we get too deep into the cold-weather season, talk to your doctor to see if you should take a vitamin D supplement.

  1. Fights Depression

Researchers have found a connection between depression and vitamin D deficiency. While more research is needed, screening vitamin D levels is taking place when patients are going to see a doctor with symptoms of depression.

  1. Strengthens Bones

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which is a major component of bone health. Calcium and vitamin D are needed for bone growth as well as to prevent bones from becoming brittle or osteoporosis.

  1. Prevent Diabetes and Blood Pressure

More studies are needed, but there is preliminary research that shows vitamin D could be helpful in preventing both type 1 and type 2 diabetes along with serving as a therapy for hypertension (high blood pressure).
